BOWIE, MD (March 28, 2025) – The Chesapeake Baysox, in partnership with The Maryland-National
Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) and the Maryland Stadium Authority (MSA), hosted a ceremonial groundbreaking yesterday, Thursday, March 27, to mark the commencement of significant stadium improvements at Prince George’s Stadium. This milestone follows the official announcement of the project on January 29, 2025, highlighting a transformative $50 million investment into the facility.
The event welcomed distinguished guests, including baseball legend and Orioles owner Cal Ripken,
Maryland Stadium Authority Chair Craig Thompson, Acting Prince George's County Executive Tara Jackson, Deputy Director of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission Steve Carter, City of Bowie Mayor Tim Adams, and Baltimore Orioles Executive Vice President and General Manager Mike Elias and Director of Minor League Operations Kent Qualls, among other stakeholders who played a crucial role in making these renovations possible.
“The Maryland Stadium Authority is delighted that The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission and the Chesapeake Baysox have successfully taken steps to utilize state funds and our
services to invest in Prince George’s Stadium,” said Craig Thompson, Chair, Maryland Stadium Authority. “Players, coaches, and fans will cheer the improvements to this facility and ensure it remains a top sports tourism and entertainment destination in Maryland for years to come.”
The centerpiece of the upgrades is the construction of a state-of-the-art performance center with enhanced batting arenas, designed primarily to support the Chesapeake Baysox during the season.
However, in collaboration with M-NCPPC, the Baysox are actively exploring opportunities to expand the use of these facilities to serve the broader community.
“We are thrilled to break ground on these much-anticipated improvements, which will not only enhance the development experience for our players but also provide new avenues for community engagement,” said Greg Baroni, CEO and Managing Partner, Attain Sports, owner of the Chesapeake Baysox. “This
project is a testament to the power of collaboration among state, county, local, and private partners, and we look forward to seeing the lasting impact it will have on our region.”
“One of our missions in keeping Baltimore baseball strong and thriving is ensuring top-tier infrastructure and facilities for our players at every level of the organization. With these renovations, Prince George’s
Stadium will become one of the premier ballparks in the league—a true asset and extension of our organization,” said Mike Elias, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Baltimore Orioles. “This
state-of-the-art facility will not only help grow the game and Orioles fandom throughout Maryland but also ensure that we keep developing and bringing top talent right here to Bowie!”
Complementing the broader renovation project, M-NCPPC and Attain Sports previously announced the installation of two new state-of-the-art videoboards for the 2025 season. These videoboards will enhance the fan experience by delivering high-definition, dynamic visuals, engaging in-game content, and an interactive atmosphere for baseball games and special events.
“Modernizing the stadium is more than an upgrade—it’s an investment in our Prince George’s County community and a catalyst for economic growth,” said Bill Tyler, Director of M-NCPPC, Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County. “It creates a vibrant gathering place for families and visitors while driving new opportunities for local businesses.”
M-NCPPC, MSA, and Attain Sports selected Gilbane, with design partner EwingCole, as the design-build team to execute the upgrades. Additionally, the Canopy Team is assisting Attain Sports and M-NCPPC
throughout the design process.
The renovations at Prince George’s Stadium represent a continued commitment to excellence in player development while also fostering a deeper connection between the Baysox and the surrounding community.
