Maryland Stadium Authority Installing New Drone Detecting and Deterring Technologies In Advance of the 2021 Sports Seasons

New signage also reminds fans that the Camden Yards Sports Complex is a “No Drone Zone”

Baltimore, MD - The safety and security of all who visit and work at the Camden Yards Sports Complex is the Maryland Stadium Authority's (MSA) highest priority. While MSA does not generally release specifics about security related investments and deployment strategies at the complex, drones are an emerging technology posing increasing challenges for venue security nationwide.

In advance of the 2021 sports seasons, MSA is working with Aerial Armor, a company that specializes in detecting drone related threats. The drone detection system will be installed by Opening Day, and will cover both Oriole Park at Camden Yards and M&T Bank Stadium. The system will be operated by the MSA's Public Safety and Security team. Any unauthorized drones detected flying near the complex before or during games will be immediately shared with our law enforcement partners as well as with ballpark and stadium operations personnel from the Baltimore Orioles and Baltimore Ravens.

In many instances the drone operators are fans, drone hobbyists, or amateur photographers looking to capture footage of the venue, game, or favorite player. They are often unaware of the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) imposed flight restrictions in place around professional sporting events and do not fully appreciate the potential safety risks involved, or the amount of public safety resources that get diverted to respond to their actions.

The most effective approach to addressing these types of violations, is by preventing them in the first place through education and awareness, which is why the MSA has installed “No Drone Zone” signage around the complex.

As always, MSA works closely with our law enforcement partners and looks forward to safely welcoming back fans to the stands.

The MSA was established by the Maryland General Assembly in 1986 to build, manage, and maintain quality facilities to retain Major League Baseball, and return the National Football League to Maryland. MSA’s mission has expanded and evolved over the years to include sports marketing, and numerous economic studies and construction projects, and programs. To date, MSA has completed $3 billion of projects across the state.

During the challenging environment of the COVID-19 pandemic, MSA partnered with the teams, non-profit organizations, city and state agencies to utilize the Camden Yards Sports Complex to provide nourishing meals to Marylanders in need, a safe, socially distanced place to vote, and now a mass vaccination site. www.MDStad.com
